Frequently Asked Question

How much does a criminal defense lawyer cost?

Because each case is unique, legal fees can vary depending on the charges, complexity, and stage of the case. Some matters may be handled for a flat fee, while others are billed hourly or through a retainer. Factors such as whether the case is in state or federal court can also affect the cost. During your free consultation, we’ll provide a clear explanation of potential fees and payment structures so you know exactly what to expect.

What penalties and consequences should you watch out for after a conviction in Illinois?

A conviction in Illinois can result in fines, jail or prison time, probation, and license suspensions. Just as important are the long-term effects, including a criminal record that appears in background checks, difficulty finding housing or employment, problems with professional licenses, and for noncitizens, potential immigration consequences. Our firm works to minimize legal penalties and help protect your future.

Do I need a criminal defense lawyer?

Yes, you should have a criminal defense lawyer. From the moment of arrest through trial or resolution, your attorney protects your constitutional rights, negotiates with prosecutors, reviews evidence, and develops a strategy tailored to your case. Without skilled legal counsel, you could miss important defenses or make mistakes that cannot be undone.

What should you do if you’re arrested or have a criminal charge in Illinois?

Here’s a step-by-step guideline:

  1. Stay calm and be respectful — Don’t resist physically; avoid escalating the situation.
  2. Invoke your right to remain silent — You’re not obligated to talk about details of the alleged offense. You can say: “I wish to remain silent and speak with an attorney.”
  3. Do not consent to searches — You may refuse voluntary searches (but never physically resist); if the police conduct an illegal search, your lawyer may move to suppress evidence later.
  4. Ask for a lawyer immediately — You have the right to counsel. Wait until your attorney is present before making statements or signing documents.
  5. Don’t sign anything you don’t understand — Any statements or confessions can be used against you.
  6. Preserve evidence and document details — Note what happened, officer names (if known), witnesses, time, location, any injuries or damages, any documents you were handed, etc.
  7. Contact your attorney as soon as possible — The earlier your lawyer is involved, the better your chance to protect your rights and navigate bail, charges, bond, or negotiations.
  8. Comply with booking and bail procedures — Attend all court dates, meet bail conditions, turn in to custody if required, etc.

Avoid discussing your case publicly or on social media — Prosecutors and police may monitor statements and use them against you.
