Possessing a Dangerous Animal
Most states have laws regulating the ownership of exotic animals in order to protect public safety. In Illinois, it is illegal to own, care for, or in any other way have in possession a dangerous animal or primate. Ownership of one of these prohibited animals is only legal in certain cases, such as ownership by zoos, circuses, veterinary hospitals, and animal refuges. Otherwise, ownership can result in a Class C misdemeanor.
If you or someone you know has been accused of violating Illinois’ exotic animal laws, you may require legal counsel in order to ensure that your case is handled fairly and appropriately. - Up to 30 days in jail
- Up to $1500 in fines
Furthermore, the animal is likely to be taken into state custody. Exceptions exist only for primate owners who owned their animal prior to 2011 and who registered with the local animal control administrator before April of 2011.
